The afternoon sun drove its merciless heat into the hard Texas ground. Jack and Scott watched as the three men squirmed in their saddles as if they were trying to decide what to do.
Texas Rangers did not gamble with idle threats. Two of the men started unhooking their gun belts, the third man rolled off his horse on the side away from the Rangers. Jack saw this and he was prepared.
His first shot slammed into the man's upper leg which made him howl with pain. As he dropped toward the ground, Scott drove a bullet into the man's chest. He fell dead on the ground. A second man now acted as if he wanted to join his friend, but Jack gave him his only warning.
Jack suffered the loss of his young wife and child and he had drifted toward Texas. He met and was encouraged by Scott to become a Texas Ranger. Jack loved his job! The Taxas Rangers had a great reputation for "getting their man" and being honest.
